Hong Kong

Our flight out from Beijing transiting via Hong Kong to Delhi had a 3 hour delayed departure due to high winds, meaning we arrived in Hong Kong with 40mins to spare before takeoff and were promptly greeted by an airline representative at the gate, who informed us it was airline policy to close the gate 60mins prior to departure...He then led us to the “help” desk where an hour was spent negotiating a new flight and accommodation and meals for the next 24 hours while trying to hear ourselves think over the irate American couple next to us repeatedly and vehemently informing the airline staff they were “advantage gold plus” members...

As midnight came and we rather forlornly hopped onto the airport-hotel transfer bus, we journeyed on the motorway several minutes before pulling up to the Novotel hotel - we hopped off the bus, entered the lobby and suddenly – vindication!! We were each put up in our very own executive suite complete with soul-restoring shower, luxurious bed, ipod-docking music system, humongous TV and an Italian coffee machine. We were delighted to discover a fully equipped gym in the hotel basement and smashed a classic 1am caveman session before a long, rejuvenating shower and retiring exhausted into the warm embrace of restorative sleep.

The next day we returned to the airport, cashed in on our free meal tokens eating the airport out of house, home and waffles before bounding onto our plane fat and happy with a cheshire cat grin.

Beds jumped on: 3 Californian kings
Waffles consumed: 15
Cost to airline for the sake of 20 minutes: HKD$12,600 = US$1,622 equivalent
